The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is an independent agency of the executive branch of the United States federal government responsible for the civilian space program, as well as aeronautics and aerospace research. Apollo 9 was commanded by James McDivitt, Command Module Pilot Dave Scott and Lunar Module Pilot Rusty Schweickart. The mission tested the LM engines, backpack life support systems, navigation systems, and docking maneuvers.
